08:26 pm - Alphabetical Me
A pointless but whimsical meme from shadowycat.

A - accent: My vowels say California, but my speed says New York. Accurate.
B - breast size: Kinda sloppy.
C - chore you hate: Dusting. What's the point?
D - dad's name: Joe
E - essential make-up item: Does lip balm count? If I'm going to use just one thing, it would be eyeliner pencil.
F - favourite perfume: Chanel No. 5
G- Gold or Silver: Silver has been a lot more popular for quite a while. I am a fan of mixed metals and I have a fair amount of jewelry that combines them. One of the rings I wear all the time is a twist of silver, brass, and copper strands.
H - hometown: Berkeley
I - insomnia: Almost never
J - job title: Managing Editor
K - kids: Nope
L - living arrangements: I live in a very small, old apartment in a very nice Manhattan neighborhood with my husband and his bicycles.
M - mum's birthplace: Hartford City, Indiana.
N - number of apples you've eaten: Today, one. This fall, more than I intended to (that bag had more apples in it than realized).
O - overnight hospital stays: Only as a visitor.
P - phobia: I'm not afraid of heights, but I have a very specific panicky feeling about long flights of open stairs. I really hate coming down from a high row in a stadium -- I just envision tumbling all the way down to the field.
Q - quest: To figure out if my current career path will still be viable until I retire in 20-ish years, and if not, to figure out an alternative.
R - religious affiliation: Episcopalian (ex-Catholic)
S - siblings: One brother and one sister.
T - time you wake up: On work days, 5:30. I'm basically a morning person. Otherwise this commute would have killed me long ago.
U - unnatural hair colour you've worn: I've done spray-on color for concerts a few times. I remember doing bright orange once, and also metallic silver. It's very weird how they coat your whole body when you wash them out in the shower. I'm planning to dye the tips of my hair bright red for the holidays this year.
V - vegetable you refuse to eat: I would be quite content never to have another lima bean.
W - worst habit: Overthinking.
X - x-rays you've had: Lots from dentists, several for my crooked spine, a few when I broke my foot.
Y - yummy food you make: All of 'em. About the only things I don't make myself are bread and BBQ.
Z - zany quirk: I'm fascinated by navigation, and I always work out exactly the most efficient route for trips I make frequently. My husband says that my secret super power is always knowing what lane to be in on the highway.
Current Mood: boredbored

04:23 pm - Men's Fashion For Downton Abbey Fans
TLo has a nice feature on the upcoming GQ fashion feature showing the Men of Downton Abbey in modern fashions with an Edwardian slant. Misteh Beehts never looked more brooding.

09:17 pm - Sandy 'n' Me 'n' NYC
I post here so little these days that I just now realized I should update following the storm. My part of Manhattan had very little damage, just a few downed branches and no flooding. The wind sounded pretty scary and I think I felt my building sway, but overall not bad. My internet has been wonky lately, and I suspect my router's fried, so I'm tethered to the modem until I can sort that out, but it's minor.

The big problem in New York City is transportation. Apparently some subway trains will start limited service tomorrow - here's the report. However, anything below 34th Street in Manhattan is pretty much a no-go. I'm enjoying working from my couch for now. My office in New Jersey is still without power, but even when they get back up, I'm not sure how I'll get there.

I'm glad to read check-ins from so many people. I hope everyone is safe and managing.

In other news, today is my third wedding anniversary. Squee!

06:24 pm - Kitchenware meme
Bold the ones you have and use at least once a year, italicize the ones you have and don't use, strike through the ones you have had but got rid of:

I wonder how many pasta machines, breadmakers, juicers, blenders, deep fat fryers, egg boilers, melon ballers, sandwich makers, pastry brushes, cheese knives, electric woks, miniature salad spinners, griddle pans, jam funnels, meat thermometers, filleting knives, egg poachers, cake stands, garlic crushers, martini glasses, tea strainers, bamboo steamers, pizza stones, coffee grinders, milk frothers, piping bags, banana stands, fluted pastry wheels, tagine dishes, conical strainers, rice cookers, steam cookers, pressure cookers, slow cookers, spaetzle makers, cookie presses, gravy strainers, double boilers (bains marie), sukiyaki stoves, ice cream makers, and fondue sets languish dustily at the back of the nation's cupboards.

I'm kind of interested in this list's construction, since it seems intended to weed out "frivolous" items. I have a tiny, tiny kitchen. I have no time for things I don't use. My salad spinner is a miniature one because I don't have room for a big one. And a meat thermometer is one of the most critical tools I own. OTOH, I don't think I have ever seen a sukiyaki stove for sale, much less in anyone's home.
